Step into a room filled with hand-carved artistry, mechanical music, and the sights and sounds of early amusement history.
Where Art, Music, And Amusement Came Together
Before recorded music filled public spaces, mechanical instruments brought entertainment to dance halls, streets, and attractions.
This exhibit features a 1928 Allan Herschell carousel with elaborate hand-carved wooden horses, along with early 1900s orchestrions, dance hall machines, outdoor organs, and street organs. Many of these music machines can still be played with tokens, letting guests experience the sound and movement of antique mechanical entertainment.
The Soundtrack Of Early Amusement
Orchestrions and organs turned public entertainment into a full sensory experience.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, mechanical music machines helped bring energy and excitement to dance halls, amusement parks, streets, and gathering places. Their hand-carved and hand-painted cases were built to impress before the first note ever played. Inside, pipes, drums, bells, and mechanical systems could create the sound of an entire band. Paired with the room’s ornate 1928 Allan Herschell carousel, these pieces capture an era when craftsmanship, music, and amusement design worked together to create something magical.
